Penduka was established in 1992. Penduka means “wake-up” in the Oshiwambo language. Penduka’s vision is a world of equal opportunities for all and, their mission statement is to help and empower women and their communities to improve their lives.
Penduka’s operations are based mostly on arts and crafts. They have two departments which include hand-craft production such as batik, sewing, pottery, glass beads, an embroidery group outside Penduka who work from home, and a gift shop that sells the hand-crafts. In addition, Penduka provides accommodation and a conference facility, a restaurant and a venue for all types of events including workshops. One of their attractions is the traditional dancing.
